You are not fighting about money.

You are fighting about safety. Or control. Or being the one who was not asked. Money is just the language the argument happens in, which is why solving it with a budget has never once worked.

In ninety minutes, I will show you both what is actually running underneath the fight, and give you the language and tools to stop having it.

I feel shut out

I feel controlled.

You never wanted to talk about it.

We always fight about money

We can't afford it.

I feel shut out • I feel controlled. • You never wanted to talk about it. • We always fight about money • We can't afford it.

Why I Do This

I spent 20 years as a Benedictine monk. When the community went bankrupt, I was the one rebuilding the systems.

That is where I learned that money problems are almost never about money. They are people problems expressed through financial decisions. Two people can look at the same number and see two entirely different futures, and neither of them is hallucinating.

I carried that into my work as an investment advisor, where I watched couples with more than enough money have the same argument as couples with none of it. The balance changed. The fight did not.

Then I wrote Taming Your Money Monster, which maps the Enneagram onto financial behavior. After enough client meetings, the patterns stop being subtle. One partner treats planning as love. The other treats planning as doubt. One sees a savings balance and feels safe. The other sees the same balance and feels trapped.

You are running different operating systems. Nobody handed either of you the documentation.

This session is where I hand it to you.

What We Untangle

Who Is This For?

Good Fit

  • You love each other and you are not headed for a lawyer

  • You have been having the same argument over and over, and you would like to retire it

  • You are both willing to look at your own patterns, not just your partner's

  • You want to understand the why underneath the conflict, not win it

  • You are open to personality-based work (Enneagram)

  • Both of you are showing up. Not one of you dragging the other.

  • You are both open to changing yourselves, not the other person.

Especially Good For:

  • Couples merging finances for the first time

  • Second marriages, particularly with children from a first marriage

  • Couples approaching retirement who have just discovered they want different things from it

  • One partner has always handled the money and both of you are tired of that arrangement

  • A significant income gap that neither of you talks about directly

  • Couples where one of you spends and the other one panics

Not A Good Fit:

  • Only one of you actually wants to be there.

  • You want a referee who will hear both sides and declare a winner. I am not going to do that.

  • You need a marriage therapist. Sometimes the money fight is the presenting symptom and not the disease. If that is what I see, I will tell you in the first ten minutes and refund you.

  • You need an investment adviser, a CPA, or an estate attorney. Those are different services and I will refer you. Investment advisory services are offered separately through Course Management Investment Advisors: CMIALLC.COM

The Enneagram Advantage

Why the Enneagram changes everything here

Most couples money advice fails because it treats two people as one household with one set of preferences. But money behavior is personality behavior, especially under stress, and stress is exactly when these conversations happen.

With two people in the room, your types become a translation layer:

  • what each of you does when you feel unsafe

  • what each of you avoids, and how you disguise the avoiding

  • how each of you justifies it, convincingly, to yourself

  • which of your patterns amplify each other and which collide

  • how you build something workable without either of you having to become a different person

The goal is not compromise. Compromise usually means both of you are quietly unhappy. The goal is a decision-making process that fits how you are each actually built.
